South Memphis Farmers Market

What is the South Memphis Farmers Market (SMFM)?

South Memphis Farmers Market was the first project of South Memphis Revitalization Plan (SoMeRAP). SoMeRAP is a resident-led effort to transform South Memphis into one of the region’s premier urban neighborhoods of choice by mobilizing local residents, institutions, and their allies to implement a comprehensive economic and community development strategy. One of the key areas of focus in the plan is healthy living, including access to healthy foods in the South Memphis community; throughout the planning process residents consistently identified access to healthy foods as one of their highest priorities. As a result of the collaborative efforts of South Memphis residents, The Works, Inc. opened the South Memphis Farmers Market on July 15, 2010.

Does the South Memphis Farmer’s Market offer healthy cooking classes?

The South Memphis Farmer’s Market has expanded its operations to include a six-day a week green grocer and a kitchen for nutrition education classes. The Kitchen at SMFM offers a cooking education curriculum called Cooking Matters. Participants attend six weekly cooking classes, which focus on how to prepare foods that are most popular in the local diet in healthier ways. Students also learn smart shopping techniques in order to minimize food waste and to maximize their food budget.

Where is the SMFM located and what are the operating hours ?

The SMFM is located on the corner of South Parkway E and Mississippi Blvd. in South Memphis. It is open from 10AM to 6PM six days Monday-Saturday.
